Apocalypse Essentials - The Mask

This post is brought to you by my friend Manda who decided to send me a message yesterday asking about how to make masks. Being that I am the 'crafty' friend she knows me to be I pointed her in several directions. Mostly towards Pinterest.

Now before we get TO much further into the mask information I would like for it to be known that the CDC has stated that wearing a face mask will NOT prevent you from catching COVID-19. However if you are already have or are an unknowing carrier, it will prevent you from spreading it to others. You know....besides just staying the heck home. I realize that staying home is not possible for everyone. We have essential workers as well as the overwhelming need to feed ourselves so we have to go to the grocery store eventually so we can replenish our stress eating snacks, I MEAN ACTUAL REAL FOOD HA HA HA! Ah hem.....now that I've stated that! WASH YOUR HANDS AND MAKE MASKS!

THE MATERIAL

The first step is to figure out material. If you've already got some fabric great! If not here are some alternatives that you can find around the house and how they stand up against blocking possible contagions and gross stuff

This particular article lists all the possible at home things that you can use to make a face mask as well as how they stand up at blocking out contagions compared to a regular surgical mask as well as an N95 mask. It also has charts as to what the best combination of materials to use for maximum breath ability as well as filtering capabilities. It's a neat article!

MASK PATTERNS

THERE ARE SO MANY POSSIBLE MASK PATTERNS! Here's a list of a few! From stupid simple to a little more advanced and nice looking.

SAVE YOUR EARS

Elastics hurt your ears? Get a headband and sew buttons on it behind your ears to loop the elastics around. No more ear pain!

DONATE!

With everything going on Hospitals, EMS, and other essential workers are running out of masks to use. I know Jo-Ann's Fabrics has mask kits for sewists to pick up curbside that will be donated to hospitals. There may be other fabric stores doing the same. Check in your locality!

Stay safe!

H.J.
